Cool Girl Beauty
I have no first-hand knowledge of this topic, as I’m way too enthusiastic to be a cool girl. But I have enough experience observing cool girls in their natural habitats (by which I mean Paris and Instagram) that I feel like I can make educated guesses about what they would and – crucially – wouldn’t do when it comes to beauty.
Surely, no cool girl would ever go through anything resembling my 6+ product skincare routine every morning and evening. She just doesn’t care enough, plus one could use these 12 minutes in much more fun ways. But I’m pretty sure she would still remove her make-up: there would always be several bottles of Bioderma lying around all over the house and a jar of coconut oil for more serious cleansing.
She would also be willing, I suspect, to use products by other cool girls like Emily Weiss of the Glossier (and Into the Gloss) fame. Balm Dotcom is a modern version of Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream, incidentally another cool girl favourite. And she would have fascinating stuff brought from her travels – strange creams from Asia, pure argan oil from Africa and severely minimal bottles in black and white from Scandinavia.
Most of the cool girls don’t wear much make-up, but they do have a fail-safe look for the days when impact is required. It could be glitter eyeshadow or hard-core mascara (cool girls buy cheap mascaras because they are smart and know that price in this case is absolutely no indication of quality), matte oxblood lips or violet hair. Or all the above, if they feel so inclined.
A cool girl would also have something she indulges in. She would possibly only wear Chanel nail polish or would not leave the country without Sisley’s Black Rose mask or would spend her savings on 67 different sunscreens. Lip balm addiction is also common. When she likes something, she will use it until it’s completely gone and probably discontinued, too. I like to think that instead of Byredo, Le Labo or Diptyque fragrances (all arguably cool brands), she would wear Caron Tabac Blond or a slightly disturbing moss scent from the local indie perfumer.
And, of course, she would work as a mermaid in the travelling circus and read Russian poetry in the evening, with a bottle of beer. While wearing a grey sweatshirt and a tiara.*
*I’m definitely getting a tiara.
