Persian breakfast

Persian breakfast

I have to trick myself into eating breakfast, as I usually don’t have time or I just… forget. So I must come up with things I really, really like and I really, really like everything Persian-inspried. I’m not sure Dareios would recognise my muesli as an ancient Persian breakfast-food, but anything containing sour cherries and rose water seems at least vaguely Persian to me.

I made the granola based on a recipe in the New Feast, but changed it up somewhat. In my version, there are almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts and oats roasted with a mixture of apple sauce, pomegranate molasses, honey and a little oil. Later, I added sour cherries, dates, raisins, rose petals and rose water.

Orange water

To drink, I made water flavoured with blood oranges and orange blossom water. When the water is hot and flavoured with orange blossom water only, it’s called café blanc (I first learned about it here) and drunk in Lebanon – which was part of the Persian empire at some point, so I AM keeping to the theme! I think next time I’ll make the hot version with some added fresh mint.

Anyway, pictured:
– a plate from Zara home
– granola and natural yoghurt (I was too lazy to make labneh)
– a glass from Habitat
– a small saucer from Zara home
– flavoured water and slices of blood orange
– could you please imagine that there are some pomegranates as well? I planned to get some, but totally forgot.
