Winter Whites To Wear Now*

Winter Whites To Wear Now*

For me, January is the hardest month to dress for. It’s cold, which is an issue in itself, there is nothing in the shops and all the winter clothes I own seem to automatically lose all their appeal the very moment the New Year starts. I don’t want cosy knits or rich colours, I want to look fresh and crisp and fit and on top of things and maybe even a little bit edgy. Considering my post-holidays mental and physical state, financial constraints and the environment I’m in, this is an impossible brief.

This is why every year, I find small ways to cheat myself a little bit closer to that ideal of freshness and coolness. In 2017, my top tip is to wear white. And I don’t mean ski-chalet white, although a chunky white jumper or sweater dress are also very much a thing this winter. The effect I’m going for is a little bit more fashion, a bit more Celine/Alexa Chung.

The easiest way to do this trend is a white polo neck: an item that ticks both the mod and 90s boxes. Similar, but a little more sporty is the half-zip tracksuit top (as seen here, although not in white). The other relatively easy option is a white bag: I think this works especially well in a form of a clutch and if I had the resources, I would own this Victoria Beckham version already. Personally, I’ve gone for white boots. That’s not necessarily easy to pull off nor especially flattering, but I like the overall effect it gives. I would go for a pointy (or possibly square) toe and I think flats and mid-height heels work best. We are not going for the white stiletto boot look.**

White jeans have been everywhere, too, and by everywhere I mostly mean my Instagram feed. This is again a pretty tricky choice, thanks to the Liz Hurley connotations – I have absolutely no problem with Liz in white jeans, but it’s not the look the current wearers are aspiring to. The way to wear them now is either very minimally or in a slightly ironic way (see Pandora Sykes for the masterclass), in either case it does look very fresh in the middle of winter. The other plus is that while in general all fashionable jeans tend to be very complicated at the moment – patchwork, high-waist cropped mom jeans, crazy hems – you can get away with simpler shapes when wearing white, as you’re laready making a statement with the colour.

*The last time I talked about winter whites, they were of perfumed variety. For today’s theme, I would go with something slightly masculine – a citrussy-green cologne, maybe.

**Obviously in January (at least for everyday), it makes sense to pair the boots with opaque tights and/or cropped trousers or jeans, rather than follow my example on the cover picture.

Boots from Zara sale, tights from H&M.

Cool boots! A very 80s punk feel to them in a good way. Yes to something crisp but warm at this time in winter – I have some pale but not white long coats which always feel more elegant now, together with some fitted white wool dresses which also keep me warm while looking refreshing, as well as very very pale grey which doe something similar. Also white fake fur hats etc help if you can avoid looking like the Yetti (I seem to fall into this trap). For some reason though this year I am very drawn to spring pastels already and was very tempted by a long skirt and a pale yellow sweater on Saturday (which had the advantage of being warm, springlike and lightweight)…

Pastels have a very similar purpose in winter and I’m craving pastels too, although a bit less violently than white. I do have a sporty skirt suit in mint that I’m trying to figure out how to style for work; pale yellow sounds very good too. And I’m with you on white wool dresses, I’m on a hunt for one myself, I think it’s the perfect power piece.

I promise to try a white roll neck… I’ve been sorely lacking in ideas lately, though I do have a pair of white croc low-heeled shoes that could come out of their winter storage. I’ve also been getting by with a lot of clear grey tones (by the way Sophie C, that primrose outfit sounds delightful, and oh for a white woollen dress!) and my best sales purchase thus far is a pale blue trench coat which, while a little insubstantial for this time of year, is just the right shade for the light.

And thanks also for the reminder about your winter whites post! It’s a very satisfying read. I’ve been dutifully hitting the heavy perfumes lately but what I’d like instead are lily and iris (looks like another trip to Frederic Malle is a must, ahem) so for tomorrow I think my choice will be either SL’s L’Eau Froide (cold incense) or Vitriol d’Oeillet (contemptuous iced carnation). What I really want, in fact, is another go at The Different Company’s Bois d’Iris, which I tried for the first time recently. Any thoughts?

I usually don’t lack ideas when it comes to clothing, but I’m currently trying to figure out what to wear for an important event and I cannot come up with anything (or anything within my budget at least), so I sympathise.

When it comes to iris fragrances, I have written about some on the blog (just search for iris). I don’t remember if you have tried FM Iris Poudre? It is not my personal favourite, but it’s a great fragrance and especially good for winter, I think. FM has a good lily as well, but I prefer the Tom Ford ones, if you see them around.

Much appreciated, thank you. I can get to Tom Ford, yes, so will give them a whirl – I’ve seen your recommended ones hereabouts. I already have Chanel No. 19 poudré so stupidly ignored the FM poudré, but the FM lily is certainly a lovely one. And on another topic, I should have known you’ve already read that Roth!
