Workwear Wednesday: The Strange Allure of Mustard vol 1

Workwear Wednesday: The Strange Allure of Mustard vol 1

It feels ridiculous to post any clothes at the moment that go beyond bikinis, as Brussels is taking this heatwave business rather seriously. However, I realise that it’s not necessarily as warm everywhere and even if it is, at some point we’ll be back to normal, happily wearing blazers to work. And one obviously has to prepare.

Mustard has been one of the big colour stories of 2018 and unless my crystal ball is seriously malfunctioning, this is going to continue well into the autumn. This somewhat strange colour probably doesn’t strike anyone as the easiest to wear, but that’s also what makes it look fresh and exciting. And as with all colours, the wearability is more about the exact shade and undertone than it is about the colour as such.

This point is beautifully illustrated by the Zara blazer I’m wearing on these pictures. It is a faded, rather apricot-y mustard that isn’t as rich and warm as many others in the same family. Consequently, I find it extremely easy to wear, especially when paired with white, neutrals or denim. As is the case with other mustards, it also works well with tan, brown and earthy tones (see it with a more golden mustard top here) and this specific shade is also great with khaki.

The look itself is very basic: you have seen me doing something very similar before, but this is intentional. I have put together several ways of wearing mustard, this one being the beginner level, with medium and advanced yet to come*. So for Level 1, I’ve gone with a non-statement colour and a relaxed look – jeans and loafers make everything look less scary. If you are looking for variations on the theme, I think this outfit would work even better with light blue denim (and maybe a white camisole and flats). Unfortunately, my denim wardrobe is very limited and I actually don’t own a light wash pair. For workwear purposes, white jeans might be better, though, as they look a bit less casual.

How do you feel about mustard? Love it? Wouldn’t wear it if it was the last colour on earth?

*Not sure when I’ll be posting Level 2, as the look actually includes a sweater and I cannot think about sweaters at the moment without my head exploding.

I’ve been dithering over mustard for a while….your version looks great – I think you have to go bold but casual with it, no point in just an accessory?
PS. I love you blog, where you find time to do a day job too is a mystery!

I think mustard mules or a slouchy clutch could also look great, so it really comes down to what you prefer. I love this blazer, though, and there is also a knit coming up that is exactly as you say – bold but casual.

And thank you! It is certainly not always easy to keep the blog going and I don’t get enough sleep… But it helps that I am rather fast and efficient (my job is very fast-paced as well), so can execute things quickly. At the moment it’s pretty relaxed at work as well, so I’m postmg more than usual.

Your hair is absolutely gorgeous! And it seems to have grown a lot lately. Would you please consider telling about your hair (treatments, care, styling routine etc.) in a future post? By the way, I love the variety of topics on your blog!
Enjoying inmensely the present frequency of your post 🙂

I’m happy to do a hair post, although I really am not any kind of authority on this issue. But my hair is longer indeed, I just let it grow a bit (I think since the beginning of the year?) and found that it’s quite nice to have a some of length and volume for summer.

The frequency of posting is directly related to the quieter time in the office, I leave around 6pm most days, which is very unusual in my case. So enjoy it while it lasts🙂

      And thank you!

Mustard is turning up everywhere. It seems an underutilized neutral. Blue/navy, deep reds/burgundy, green, black, white … It coordinates with so much. I think that we are now far enough away from the 70s that brown and orange are no longer the obvious pairings (those combinations induce a kind of PTSD in me — scars from early childhood). The blazer looks so elegant and modern on you.

Thank you! And I agree that it is (or has been at least) underused and can be paired with so many things. Even brown, if one keeps the shapes fresh. But there are so many options that no need to risk PTSD 🙂
