12 Perfumes for Spring
I usually like to have a concept to my posts, some over-arching idea or a point I’m trying to convey. This article has no concept whatsoever. It is just a list of fragrances I’ve worn most this spring and will keep on wearing in the near future. With 1.5 exceptions, it’s an accurate reflection of my current perfume rotation: the full exception being that Mohur extrait is missing from the picture and the half exception being that I’ve only just bought Desarmant and have not worn it more than two days. I don’t of course limit myself to dozen scents for spring, but these are the ones I wear most frequently.
1. Guerlain Apres l’Ondee: my favourite Guerlain classic, this is exceptionally pretty – a soft, slightly powdery floral that I just cannot imagine anyone disliking.
2. Byredo Pulp: the fruitiest scent I know, this one on the other hand does not work for everybody. But for those it does, it’s a little bottle of pure fun. I steal it from J.
3. Chanel 28 La Pausa: one of the best irises there is, especially if you like your iris light and lovely. The only issue with this perfume is that it doesn’t last, so spray like there is no tomorrow and reapply as needed.
4. The Different Company Tokyo Bloom: an underrated modern cologne that I adore in spring. It has the familiar citrus and the green, but dandelion makes it different and unique. More thoughts here.
5. La Perfumerie Moderne Desarmant: a luscious, complex purple lilac. Despite the name of the brand, I find this very old school (although not old-fashioned) – a high quality, proper perfume.
6. Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom: nothing new here, still lovely. I did a full review in the autumn.
7. Chanel 31 Rue Cambon: I wear this one year round when I need to impress. Masterfully constructed, I love this one for work and never want to be without it. One of my absolute favourite Chanels.*
8. Olfactive Studio Panorama: another green scent, this is much more intense than Tokyo Bloom. A lush, bright beginning slowly dries down to a darker, woodier, resinous base. Read more about it here.
9. Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist: The queen of all iris scents, this is uncompromisingly rooty and not for everyone. I wear it all year, but love it especially in early spring. I have written about it (and La Pausa) here.
10. Jo Malone Wild Strawberry & Parsley: Jo Malone doing what they do best – a moderately interesting, highly wearable take on a couple of key ingredients. Herby and slightly fruity, it’s a nice casual scent. Limited edition.
11. Hermes Eau de Narcisse Bleu: one of my all-time favourite colognes, this has narcissus, woody and green notes. I love it in the shower gel version too.
12. Frederic Malle En Passant: my second lilac, this is much more ethereal than Desarmant, almost watery. It is beautiful, however, another of those scents I cannot imagine anyone disliking.
What have you been wearing?
*I have just realised that I should also have included Chanel Cristalle in this post, but I believe my bottle is in the office.
I also love “En passant”, on cold days I still love The knot from Bottega Veneta (works at the office)and I’ve used up a lot of samples.
En Passant is absolutely lovely and considering that you cannot extract any perfume material from lilac, quite a feet of fragrance construction too. For me, Bottega Veneta is one of the best mainstream houses these days, everything they do is nice and sophisticated. I don’t own anything by them, but I’m happy they are taking such an intelligent approach.
Am very tempted to “blind buy ” Tokyo Bloom! I must look into getting a sample if possible first , but I love the look and description of it!
I really, really like it, but of course your mileage might vary… Where in the world are you? Trying to think where you could get a sample with the least hassle.
I have 7 out of these 12! Last weeks I’m mainly in Chanel (28 La Pausa, 31 Rue Cambon, Beige, No 19, No 22). They seem the most Japanese office/lab friendly. I’m also curious of Tokyo Bloom.
Excellent taste ;)! I find that Chanel is usually very good for the office, although I imagine that in Japan, one needs to be even more discreet than is the case here… Not sure that Tokyo Bloom smells particularly Japanese in any way, but I believe it would be light enough for Japan/lab.
I’m in the west of Ireland. There is a stockist in Dublin, but that is not nearby by any means!
Ah, Ireland. It must be lovely where you are. By accident or divine design, almost half of my current closest colleagues are Irish and they are all great people, so I feel especially warm towards Ireland at the moment 🙂 If you cannot get any Tokyo Bloom and are getting desperate, let me know – I’ll send you some.
Adding “book” from Commodity goods to my earlier statement; got a travel-spray on Tuesday night and I’m obsessed. On me it starts fairly spicy with the sandalwood but the cucumber is impossible to miss, the dry-down ends up being a lovely dry almost fig-scent but very dry and light. A very masculine dig actually which smells great on me. Not at all sweet; in the same family as Philosykos but NONE of the sweetness. I can wear this at the office without anyone being offended and still feeling great. Any experience/thoughts on other scents from Commodity goods?
Where did you order yours from? I haven’t tried any, because they are not available at my usual perfume haunts, but I’ve been curious for a while. Really should get that 10x2ml set. Book sounds great, as do the descriptions of several others.
Ah I asked a friend to buy it for me in the US; the travelsprays are available at sephora. I’m gonna try to get some more now that I know that they are good quality.
I am very “faithful “in relation to perfumes. Once I find one i like i use it for years and years….
Now I am really into a great perfume that they created for me in Warsaw in Perfume Lab . If you happen to travel there don´t miss it http://mo61.pl/ I don´t know what I will do when I will finish it …
Other perfumes on my shelf now :
For the day Serge Lutens, Fleur de Citronier ( i am fan of S. Lutens)
For the night , Serge Lutens, Datura Noir and Fracas -Robert Piguet
For any time- O de Lancome
I am very fickle with perfumes, I like to try new things and have many in rotation. That said, if I really like something, I’m unlikely to change my mind. I love your picks, I’m also a huge Serge Lutens and Fracas fan. Have been thinking about Datura Noir for summer…
