August Sun

August Sun

Maybe it’s just me, but the sun in August seems different. Lighter and brighter somehow than in the early summer, making everything look faded and a bit washed out. Or maybe the sun is the same, but everything is indeed bleached by the suns of June and July. The grass is parched, the flowers are wilting, colours are desaturated and nothing happens.

I like these August afternoons, even if these sun-faded days exist more in my head than in Estonian reality – my imagination is a force to be reckoned with. I imagine myself, slim and wiry and tan, hair almost white from the sun, reading Southern Gothic and wearing simple leather sandals and no make-up. These dog days of summer are the only time I can envisage putting on a tie dye dress, as that, too, looks worn and faded. Or I could wear a pair of utilitarian shorts and an old t-shirt (possibly khaki). I imagine a Northern sea, miraculously warmed by the wind; huge pale trunks of driftwood and the smell of dried seaweed on the beach. I imagine the expectation of thunder that never arrives.

And what do you say – this summer, all this has happened. OK, I’m not tan and wiry, but everything else is true.

I feel the same way about the end of summer, everything has a dusty or faded look. I’ve also been coming back to Wood, Sage and Sea Salt more and more.

I think it’s a nice and easy scent, especially good for late summer/early autumn. Have you read anything interesting lately, by the way?
