A Skirt of Gold

A Skirt of Gold

One of the first posts I did for the blog – more than a year ago now – was on brocade skirts. I still stand by every word I wrote, but brocade is obviously not the only way to do statement skirts. If you’re looking for a trendier version of the same idea, look no further than metallic fabrics. Like most things in fashion lately, the popularity of shiny skirts is down to Alessandro Michele and Gucci – they did a khaki-gold one and a silver leather version and now everyone’s at it.

A pleated midi silver skirt is potentially the most ‘now’ of all the options, but I’ve somehow ended up with two gold versions. The one on the cover picture is made of true gold leather, in a slightly boxy shape reaching below the knees. The other is a bronzy gold, has tiny pleats and is much lighter and looser. I also suspect it’s made of petroleum.

The value of a gold skirt is that no matter what else you wear – a t-shirt, sweater, sneakers – no one can ever accuse you of not making an effort. You are wearing a golden skirt, for chrissake! It will elevate every outfit. It will make people not notice you bad hair day. It will draw attention – trust me, everyone will be looking at your skirt. If you feel uncomfortable when people look at you, I highly recommend not wearing any golden items.

Compared to brocade skirts, a metallic one works better in casual ensembles and with flats, especially when the shape is relaxed (as opposed to a pencil skirt). I really like them with a worn t-shirt and Converse, I think it’s a very modern look. The other great option is to go full-on Gucci and pair the skirt with a patterned jumper, velvet sandals and, if you’re brave, colourful socks and a beret (Alexa’s take is pretty pared down, but close to perfect). A silver version also works very well with the current sport trend, in combination with a simple white top and fashionably ugly footwear.

I wear both of my skirts to work, too, but there is almost nothing I wouldn’t wear to work. So you might want to calibrate your own approach accordingly.

PS The cover picture was originally not shot for this post and therefore doesn’t give the best view of the skirt. Both skirts are from Zara, but the leather one was bought a couple of seasons back.
PPS I broke my iPad and as that is my main blogging device, the posting schedule might be even more erratic than usual. I’m trying to get this sorted, fast.

It’s not entirely clear. I found it on the floor in the bedroom, the screen shattered. I suspect J stepped on it when he came to say goodbye – it’s possible the iPad was under my clothes or something. It’s also possible that it fell from the bed, but this has happened before without any consequenses. As you may have noticed, I’m careless with things.

This is great and I am such a fan of this look – in fact yesterday I was looking a t a midi gold pleated skirt. I have also worn a silver sequinned skirt to work so it appears there is very little I won’t wear to work either…
I actually think a sequinned pencil skirt works really well in so many guises including flats – and I have them in navy and khaki as well. This has reminded me to use the khaki one this weekend!

Again, we are entirely on the same page: I also have a navy sequin skirt and it’s such a work horse for me! And khaki would be great. Btw, & Other Stories have a very modern looking pink one I’m having my eye on.
