Eye Make-Up, Revisited

Eye Make-Up, Revisited

It’s been long since I’ve found eye make-up exciting – for something like 10 years, it’s been all about the lips. And a good base. But eyes? I got to a point where I thought that if I see another smoky eye, I’ll just die of boredom. I even got tired of mascara, once my favourite make-up item. No eye action with a strong lip seemed much more exciting than the other way around.

Recently, however, I have found myself interested in the eyes again. I’m not sure I move in sync with the times here, with the whole world mesmerized by Kendall Jenner’s mouth. But I do have a feeling that in more fashion-y circles, there is a general, slow shift back towards the eyes.

One look I really like at the moment is very lashy, but not in the beautybloggers-doing-to-rows-of-fakes way. It’s about big, black, clumpy lashes as a statement. This requires discipline in leaving the rest of your face alone (bare is best, but you can use a natural base and possibly something on your brows), otherwise it’ll not work as intended. And I guess you need to wear something relatively cool, or people might think you are simply unable to apply your mascara.*

Clumpy Eyelashes

I’m a bit out of touch when it comes to mascaras, as I’ve been happy with my very elegant Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara (it doesn’t really give much volume, as it’s a tubing one). But YSL traditionally gives good clump, so I bought their Shocking to get the result I wanted. The trick is to keep applying until it doesn’t look pretty any longer.

Another thing that looks fresh to me right now is gold. Not pretty, pale, silverfish gold or rose gold, but proper, good old yellow gold. I have a Laura Mercier Caviar stick in Gilded Gold that gives you lots of impact with minimum effort. I wear it all over the lid plus on the lower lashline and I think it looks modern, especially if you pair it with minimal, Celinesque clothes.

I have also bought the YSL Couture Kajal – I haven’t owned a kohl/kajal pencil for ages. True, I got it partly because it’s a beautiful object, but I plan to wear it, too. And most incredibly, I’ve been thinking of a bright, bold eye, with a haphazard placement of multiple colours. This might be a step too far, but as they say, fortune favours the bold.

*They might still think that, of course. Also, this look doesn’t photograph easily – I had to resort to a selfie (apologies for the appalling quality) and the clumps are still not really visible. But trust me, they are there.

There must be something in the air. I’m getting interested in mascara again, after years of rarely wearing it. This will inevitably lead to multiple purchases as each one is not-quite-right. Sigh…
Due to my age, I suspect that if I indulged in the clumping effect, I might end up looking rather terrifying. You, on the other hand, look great. 🙂

I’m telling you, we are witnessing a seismic shift 🙂 What type of mascaras do you like? Or what do you want them to do? (And thanks, again.)

Honestly, I don’t know what type of mascara I like any longer. I used to wear Lancôme the most frequently. Now that I’m in the throes of my face migrating south, the biggest shift is that my upper eyelids and brows are lowered. You can achieve this effect yourself by pushing down on your brows. Maybe have a couple of glasses of wine first – this exercise is not for the faint of heart. 😉 Anyway, my usual eyeliner pencil is not doing its magic any longer as it’s barely visible. I think I need some volume and definitely length, plus an eyelash curler to open up my eyes. A face lift wouldn’t hurt, either.

Have you tried any tubing ones? I have started to like them a lot, as they look elegant, do not smudge at all and can be removed with water. Unfortunately, if you want lots of volume, these are not the best.

Let’s see. What have I learnt from your blog recently? 1) That most of the days I look like a boy, 2) That I suck at applying mascara but that might pass as “a look”. Not bad.
