Smythson Panama Notebook
I spend an entirely unreasonable amount of time staring at fancy notebooks. This mostly happens on Hermes and Smythson web sites but I don’t discriminate: show me a pretty notebook and I’ll fantasize about it, regardless of the brand.
When I was in London recently, I decided to finally do something about it and came home with a small Smythson Panama Notes lambskin-bound notebook in Nile Blue. I also had it stamped with my name: it looks better without it, but I cannot resist a monogramming service. And as I’m not especially fond of my initials, I went with the full name.
Let’s be honest here and admit that as opposed to all those tight dresses and high heels that I actually wear, this is mostly a decorative rather than a practical purchase. You can, of course, write in this notebook, but it’s quite small (9x14cm) and I personally am not a great fan of featherweight paper – although Smythson’s is of good quality.
It is a lovely object, however: it feels wonderful to touch and looks understated and tasteful (if you disregard the name on the cover). I love the signature Smythson blue and as I’ve loved it for years already, don’t expect to tire of it any time soon. It also works beautifully with my Comme des Garçons make-up bag. Looks familiar? Of course it does.
Lovely! Yes, the colors are very familiar! I sometimes go into paint stores and pick up swatches just to look at the colors. Yep, I’m a nerd. 🙂
Do you plan on using your notebook?
Yes! I love to look at swatches, too. Although when I have to choose a colour for real, too much choice can be confusing. Regarding the notebook: I’m taking it one step at a time and carrying it with me, let’s see about actual use 🙂
I actually own one too. I used it for entirely unworthy purposes, unfortunately. I won’t get another until I’ve sorted out my handwriting.
Unworthy? I cannot believe that from Oscar Worthy!
Hi Annikky, new comer to your blog here – I hope gentlemen are welcome. I could not resist commenting on a Smythson notebook, they are great and incredibly unnecessary things one cannot resist to. I’m a traveller, and stick to Moleskine just because I lose my note books often. Still, I’m one of those lusting after those beautiful Hermes notebooks in that uncomfortable less-than-A5 size. Thanks for the nice reading!
Dear Lupo, thanks for stopping by – gentlemen are very much welcome! I also absolutely agree, nobody NEEDS that tiny Smythson. On the other hand, I’m convinced that it’s OK to want something simply because you like it, even if it’s not entirely practical. If a thing brings you joy, it means it has a function. I don’t know if you noticed, but I in fact have a post about a Moleskine notebook somewhere on the bog, too 🙂
A post on Moleskine? Off to read it! Unnecessary things are a pleasure. To hell with practicality 🙂
