The Smell of a Very Handsome Man (a.k.a. Arquiste Art Deco Velvet Candle)
My sister, who isn’t easily impressed by frivolous luxury products, took one sniff of the Arquiste Art Deco Velvet candle and exclaimed: “Oh, it smells like a very handsome man!” I believe this to be very close to the original premise of the scent – Art Deco Velvet is the candle version of The Architects Club, capturing a moment in a Mayfair bar in 1930s.
The description says: “A group of architects gather for cocktails at Mayfair’s smartest Art Deco smoking room. As they settle in the warm interior of dark woods, leather and velvet, London’s bright young things burst in, frosted martinis in hand, surrounded by a cloud of laughter, white smoke and fine vanilla.” I usually don’t care much for the stories behind perfumes, but Arquiste does them better than most and – crucially – one can see a connection between the narrative and the actual scent (this is far from common).
The reason I wasn’t crazy about The Architects Club as a fragrance was that while it does match the scene above, it’s much milder and less adventurous than I imagined. The same is true for the candle, but the softness works better for me in this format – it’s mostly a woody vanilla with some refined tobacco and leather notes. I’m not generally a vanilla person, but this is a lovely, very sophisticated take. The throw is great, but the scent never overwhelms.
If you think all this is well and good, but you’re interested in some proper smoke, leather and dark wood, try the Dark Galleon instead – the translation of the Nanban perfume into home fragrance. There are two other options, the unique Mexican Baroque (I suspect it’s inspired by Anima Dulcis, although it’s not specifically mentioned anywhere) and St Regis, a beautiful green floral. I found it very difficult to pick just one.
Despite my obsession with luxury candles, I’ve become a bit jaded, as everybody seems to be doing them these days. Still, I think the recent launches from Arquiste manage to stand out. The design is exquisite (the vessel is beautiful and there is a golden metal lid, very tastefully done), the fragrances interesting, the quality very good. Of course, for this price, one shouldn’t expect anything less. If you’re looking for a generous present for someone with a classically elegant, but not boring taste, these would make an excellent choice. Or if you yourself are in possession of such a taste and in need of a gift, give these a sniff.
I bought my candle at Senteurs d’Ailleurs in Brussels and you can get them online, too.
Dear Anniky, for lack of a better place…this is the website I refer to on NST http://www.deroedel.com/eng_index.php
He may speak English, I am not sure, and if you would consider doing a weekend or day with him please send me a mail so I can prepare you for the weirdest but loveliest dogperson I know.
I don’t use scented candles as I am not sure if my dog is comfortable with the added smell in our home….but I do like them.
Thank you for the link! As the website is also in English, I guess there might be at least someone who speaks the language? I will discuss with my sister who will bear lots of the dog-related responsibility.
What kind of dog do you have? And apologies if you have mentioned this and I have forgotten.
We have a German Shepherd, she is called Aylah, but we often call her Angela (because Merkel, because our dog is essentially running the show 😉 ). I am glad to read your sister will be ‘co parent’ (not andromorphisising here) for Lumi. As you know we have our own business, and I am so fortunate to work from home, but even then we sometimes look at each other and saying, Angela is a lot of work. And really she isn’t, it is just when you are so busy it feels like that. Fortunately we have sort of co parents for her, who once in while take her on great adventures, much to her satisfaction. I am also sure that my having been ill for a long time, and not having fully recovered, colours my perception, and I don’t want to dump that on you or anyone for that matter.
Anyway, we are going on holiday coming weekend, 12 days of beach and what comes with that, and I hope that gives me the last push. Aylah will have baby sitters, and I think she will boss them around in the most subtle of ways, the best kind of leadership.
What an eye catching title! Must try some scents along these lines – I thought Tabac Blond was incredible when I first sniffed it but realise that was around 02 or 03 and so would very much qualify as vintage now. Although candles appeal I never seem to use them up, and given we had a fire over a year ago and have only just moved back in, while it had nothing whatsoever to do with candles and everything to do with electrics, I suspect I will remain super cautious for a while. That said, room scents with reed diffusers are quite another thing and I love using fig smelling ones at the moment as they promise spring.
I think even the current Tabac Blond is very nice and much more potent than The Architects Club/Art Deco Velvet. Nanban is more in that direction, although sweeter and spicier. I used to be very dismissive about scented candles and in a way I wish I still was – it’s an expensive hobby.
I am a fan of much of the Arquiste line, but have never tried their candles. This is very tempting. I love Anima Dulcis; it is very high on my full bottle list. However, a candle version (the Mexican Baroque definitely sounds similar) would be wonderful. I too was disappointed in the Architect’s Club fragrance. I do enjoy it, but it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, being a little too sweet for me. Or maybe it just wasn’t what I expected. It’s grown on me, but it’s nothing I would ever splurge for. Again, a candle may be a different story…
Scented candles were my gateway drug on the way to perfume addiction. My hard-earned dollars have gone up in Cire Trudon – scented smoke more often than I like to admit. I succumbed to a Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt candle last fall, also. Sadly, I found the throw disappointing on that one. I have found a good U.S. source for nice candles at a reasonable price: Ergo Soy Candle. I found these in a small boutique in Delaware years ago. Ergo’s Sage Pine and Moroccan Cedar are wonderful scents for cool weather.
What are your favourite Trudons? I love Balmoral, but haven’t tried too many others. I have had good luck with Jo Malone, in fact, although WS&SS is indeed pretty delicate. I love Mimosa & Cardamom and Blackberry & Bay both in perfume and candle format. I googled Ergo and Monkey Grass spunds good, too!
