The Perfect Shelfie: COMB by Jaanus Orgusaar
I haven’t done an interiors post for a long time, as my attention has been elsewhere and not much has been happening with our home. I’m back at it, however: after years of dithering, I finally bought two Jaanus Orgusaar COMB shelves. I have shown them on Instagram already, but as not all of you are there, I’m posting them here as well. Because I really want to show them off.
COMB must be one of the most striking shelves I’ve ever seen. There are several sizes and colour options; mine are medium in white – the easiest shade for most interiors, probably. Although the form is pretty ambitious, the symmetry and clean lines make it a good fit for many modern rooms. You could also buy one of the big ones and style the entire space around it.
The only problem – if you can call it that – is that these shelves aren’t really meant to hold a lot of stuff. They are best for displaying some of your nice things, with maybe some of the slots more practically engaged (and some possibly left bare). This does not make them the best book shelves for me, specifically: I own a lot of books. As you can see, this hasn’t stopped me and I love them regardless. Just keep in mind that you simply cannot squeeze many volumes into a COMB, as this is not what it’s designed for.
In everything else, COMB is surprisingly utilitarian. It comes in an incredibly compact flat pack and is therefore a doddle to transport, it’s easy to assemble and not difficult to mount on the wall. If you want a striking shelf that would pull its weight as a design element, look no further. If you want a shelf that would house your 1000 books, this may not be for you. Or you could get it anyway and hence have an excuse to buy more bookshelves.
Your shelves are fabulous and such a great scale for your room. I can imagine you could have fun with colour blocking or creating ‘exhibits’ too. Would be perfect above my bed with my current reading pile, poetry and some found objects. Please post more interiors…I love the height of your room and the fireplace. Ideally, i would like a wall of built-in shelves for all my books etc. i also have a big yellow armchair in my room.
There is something about yellow armchairs, right? I would love to do more interiors posts, but unfortunately, it requires some progress with interiors first… Our ground floor rooms are more-or-less done now, but the bedroom is unfinished and the guest room/library not even started yet. Like you, I’m a fan of high ceilings and fortunately traditional Brussels houses tend to have them. I regret that the fireplaces aren’t functional, but that’s unfortunately inevitable in Brussels.
