What I Do With My Hair

People have been asking me lately about things I feel entirely unqualified to talk about: morning routines, romance novels and, maybe most surprisingly, my hair. The only thing my hair has to recommend itself is its colour and that, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, is fake. I am also bad at doing my hair and if I had the money and the time, I would get blow-dries twice a week. One of my favourite things about Nwe York was that I could walk along a random street and have my hair done at 9pm, for much less money than in Brussels.

So the main thing I do to my hair is that I have it coloured. This is going to sound horrible, but my advice for those who want to go blonde is to find the best salon you can afford. My hair has been through everything: it’s been long and black, three centimeters of platinum blonde, heartstoppingly red and boringly potato-coloured, but I’ve never seen a cheap blonde that looked good.

I go religiously and have my hair cut and dyed once a month – for all its feebleness, it grows manically and four weeks will make my roots already very obvious. I wash it as seldom as I can, both because I’m lazy and to spare my hair. I don’t really care about what shampoo I use and I’m not faithful to any. I do like Christophe Robin’s Antioxidant Cleansing Milk, as it’s extremely gentle to coloured hair, but I’m happy to use any old L’Oreal Elvive that I can find.

The only hair product that I must have at hand at all times is Christophe Robin Shade Variation Care in Baby Blonde. It is a purple conditioner that keeps yellow and brassy tones at bay. I have tried others and some have been good (Davines does a decent dupe), but this one is still my favourite. Also working its way up to the ‘must have’ category is Olaplex No 3 Hair Perfector that I use as a conditioner or mask: it started its life as a salon treatment and you can tell. Olaplex is the best thing I’ve found against the dryness and frizziness of my over-processed hair. Sometimes I add a leave-in product to emphasize the point: Davines Ol All In One Milk is still good.

As for styling… I honestly am pretty rubbish at it. Or maybe it’s that I always prioritise skincare over my hair and therefore don’t do much to it. The one thing I miss about longer hair is that I could always put it into a bun. I do have some products that I like, though, and that help somewhat: The iconic Oribe Dry Texturising Spray is one and I love Sam McNight’s Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist (the hairspray is nice, too). I am relatively promiscuous when it comes to dry shampoo, but Klorane always works.

Despite my lack of expertise on the matter, I find all my needs are relatively well covered by the above. Where I could use some improvement is when it comes to a product that I could use on dry hair, to reduce the dryness and frizz. I bought Oribe’s Featherbalm Weightless Styler, but i do not adore it. So if you happen to have recommendations, I’m all ears.

What are your favourite hair products?

My hair and I have an adversarial relationship, mostly based on its insistence on continuing to evolve new and strange textures, none of which I am equipped to deal with. I’m the only person in my family to have inherited (from some far flung ancestor) curly hair. In all my school pictures I looked like a dandelion. What I’ve been using a lot lately is Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil applied sparingly to the ends—or applied more liberally if I’m wearing it curly—to tame the frizz. I also find Josie Maran’s argan oil or Drunk Elephant’s marula oil good on the ends, and they’re multitaskers. I use a lot of Kevin Murphy, Oribe, and Living Proof. Always on the lookout for the next miracle product though. I briefly considered buying the new Dyson hair dryer last month until I came to my senses and realized it costs the same as a plane ticket. Still, I’ve heard it’s really good.

We seem to have very similar taste in hair products. I love Kevin Murphy, but Cult Beauty doesn’t ship it here😞 The Living Proof things I’ve used I’ve liked, too. I in fact used to use Invisible Oil on my ends, might just get a new bottle – but I also have The Ordinary’s marula oil, I’ll see if that works. And I have been seriously considering the Dyson: it is extremely expensive, but then again, so is my skincare. The main argument against it is that I wouldn’t use it often enough to justify the cost.
