TagInto the New Year: Darkness and Unicorns
It’s been a weird start of the year for me. I had a good break: celebrating with family, visiting the snowy Estonian countryside, reading, eating gingerbread and sauerkraut, buying a new dress. Then I learned that our (rented) house in Brussels had been broken into.
On the Importance of Trying Things On
If there is one thing that being obsessed with clothes gives you, it’s a good understanding of what works for your body and your style and what doesn’t. I can walk into Zara and leave in ten minutes with a full, entirely functional outfit. Faster, if there’s no queue. (Of course, this is only possible because I have a very standard body in a size that Zara caters to.) (And of course one is trying NOT to walk into Zara for high-speed shopping sprees, but it’s just a more believable example than Gabriela Hearst.)
The Classics: A Cream Tweed Skirt
When I was shooting this series (there are two more posts to come), I explained it to the photographer as ‘inspired by Melania Trump’. I was joking, but only a little. The slightly embarrassing truth is that I have a soft spot for some rather conservative clothing categories. I’m not conservative in any part of my life, style usually included, but I do like to have some pieces that project a relatively timeless and polished image.
Back to Basics
If you are someone who’s interested in clothes, chances are that in recent months you have been pondering your relationship with them. Does one really need any, beyond track pants? Was the pleasure you took in dressing up real or did you just imagine it? Who even are we when not directly exposed to the gaze of other people and their judgement?
Go For Gold! Or Silver. Or Bronze.
I am somewhat dubious about colour theories when it comes to clothes. If they work for you, great. In my case, I find that it is much easier to just try things on and see how they look on me, rather than spend all those hours figuring out your ‘type’ and the..
July Ennui and a Red Velvet Dress
Many of life’s biggest pleasures are seasonal: wild strawberries, August skies, the slow arrival of spring. There is also much joy to be had dressing in tune with the changing seasons – finding the perfect summer dress, figuring out how to look chic in the N..
Workwear Wednesday: Fresh & Sharp
Office wear posts are among my favourites: I like the genre and many of you seem to find my ideas genuinely useful. So I will attempt to do these looks on a regular basis, now that my work life will hopefully be a bit more… regular. I’ll return to my old p..
The Pink Dress: Reflections on Wearing Colour
There are several entirely rational reasons for not wanting to buy and/or wear colourful clothes: they date faster than neutrals; you tend to get tired of them quicker; they are more difficult to combine with other items of clothing. Often, bright colours ar..
The New Suit
The pace at work is getting almost unbearable and the spring refuses to arrive both in Tallinn and Brussels, but I’ve been cheered up by these pictures of my Tallinn Dolls by Karolin Kuusik suit. Although taken a while back, I’ve just received them from the ..
What to Wear to Meet the President
If you’re an Estonian, the Independence Day reception will need no introduction. If you’re not, let me quickly fill you in: it’s the event hosted by the Estonian President every year on 24 February. There are hundreds of guests (ministers, ambassadors, artis..
