Sporty Sunglasses: Dior & Others

Only blogging about things you want to blog about is obviously the main upside of having a small-ish independent blog like mine: there are no advertisers to consider, no engagement numbers to obsessively follow and the readers also know what the deal is and put up with your eccentricities and occasional silences. This approach isn’t always best for getting some blogging done, though.

I had a couple of posts lined up for the Easter weekend, but with 25 degrees outside, I just could not make myself write about Tom Ford’s Velvet Gardenia, nor ponder the issue of men reading too few books by and about women (both posts are coming once I get over the weather shock). The topics just weren’t right for my mood and while I make an effort to be disciplined, I do not want to force myself to write.

So I was frantically trying to come up with something suitably summery and in the end I did. As you might know, I was in Venice recently (another subject I would like to tell you about, but again, it requires moodier weather). With the exception of some small food items and gifts, I only bought one thing while there: a pair of Dior sunglasses. They are huge and have a sporty, maybe even a robot-like look. Despite that, I get a diva vibe from them, a modern one – more Lady Gaga than Elizabeth Taylor.

While I like my clothes to be rather flattering and the silhouettes relatively classic, I prefer sunglasses that are a bit more avant-garde. It is an easy way to add some edge to one’s outfit and if it doesn’t make me prettier, so be it. I have my two pairs of old Celine sunglasses that work wonderfully for that and the Diors fall into the same camp – the jury is still out on the new Celine and I haven’t decided yet whether I will consider buying from them again, so I needed a different brand to get my fix.

Dior is obviously expensive and not anyone can or wants to afford their accessories (I know no real people who can afford their clothes). However, the point about modern eyewear in general and sporty sunglasses in particular remains. Whatever your price point, this is the most effortless way to change up your look, easier than putting on a red lip. There is no shortage of sport-influenced sunnies this season – I definitely saw some in Mango and in H&M – and I believe it’s one of those trends that will be around for several years. You could also buy glasses that are actually meant for skiing or cycling, they often have that very cool futuristic look we are aiming for. And while not exactly cheap, I think these Prada ones look great and don’t cost as much as you’d maybe expect.

This post also serves the purpose of showing you what my face (or half of it) looks like when not treated by some of the best makeup artists in Estonia and not photographed by highly skilled professionals. I took the selfie in our garden yesterday, after applying some very greasy SPF (from the picture, it also looks like I have applied some to my sunnglasses). I have just experienced the worst breakouts of the last 5 years and am slowly recovering from them – this partly explains why I haven’t posted about skincare, as I’m not sure what caused this mess. I do not wake up looking like I do in this post. I know you know that, but still felt like saying it.

I hope the weather has been stunning also where you are and you’ve had a lovely (long) weekend. I’ll be back soon. If it isn’t too warm. Or too cold.

I absolutely love the sunglasses and they suit your perfectly. Actually I think they’re quite appropriate given that you love sci-fi and I can imagine you playing a glamorous heroine in a futuristic film. Sunglasses are a major obsession for me as I have very sensitive eyes and also think they add a touch of drama to an outfit. Normally I stick to really cheap pairs but this year I bought some round cat eye ones from J Crew and find them such fun and so retro, plus some pink round ones from & Other Stories.
Sorry to hear about your breakouts though. Skin problems are miserable so I hope you find a routine which works.

I feel so validated by your approval! I came late to sunglasses, which was stupid of me, as my eyes (like yours) tolerate light very badly.

The breakouts have fortunately stopped, but it takes me a long time to get rid of the pigmentation they leave behind.
