The Earrings for War and Peace
Those who know me in real life or have been reading the blog for a while are aware that I’m challenged in the earring department: no functioning piercings means I either have to wear clip-ons or something like this cuff from Anni Jürgenson. This unfortunately limits my choices quite a bit and as clip-ons are also painful to wear for long periods of time, I don’t buy earrings very often – even though they are my favourite type of jewellery.
But now and again, something amazing enough comes along and I surrender. There are a few brands that regularly produce nice clip-ons: Dolce & Gabbana (super camp and fun, but way over my budget), Oscar de la Renta (surprisingly, quite a bit cheaper than D&G, although not cheap), Kenneth Jay Lane (almost reasonable prices) and Prada/Miu Miu (if I’m lucky, just at the upper limit of what I’m willing to pay).
Last season, Miu Miu did a lovely multicoloured pair of earrings that sold out too fast for me to buy. So when I saw a similar crystal pair recently, I jumped on them immediately. No regrets. A friend called these “worthy of a Russian ball’ and they are, indeed, very old school ballroom kind of earrings. I’m not a Swarovski crystal person most of the time, but I like the dangly quality of these and, well, something light-reflecting close to your face is not necessarily a bad idea.
They certainly dress you up immediately and easily, with even less effort than is required for changing shoes or putting on red lipstick. I wore them to work the other day and while I’m known for wearing pretty statement-making stuff to work, I don’t think anything has ever garnered more attention than these earrings; with the possible exception of this dress. So in case you have a ball in St Petersburg coming up or you just like to wear diamonds (almost) to work, these are pretty perfect.
De-lurking, finally, as it just won’t do to keep fun clip-on earrings to myself. I’ve had good luck with Alexis Bittar. You can often find his stuff on sale and I think his website ships internationally. That said, thank you for another lovely blog to read with my morning tea (saw you on NST). Keep up the great work–your wit and humor along with your fashion sense are a bright spot on the web!
First, thank you for delurking (and for the kind words) – it always makes me so happy when people do that. Second, thank you for the tip! I of course checked out Alex Bittar earrings immediately and found a turquoise pair I really, really like. And it’s on sale…
Wonderful! Glad you found something you liked. I owe you a jewel for your enabler tiara too–thanks to you, I now own 3 COS cashmere hats and some MF Wedding Imperial (another reason to order from Luckyscent-ha!).
Hahahaa, how sweet! I hope you like both the hats and the tea.
