The Strange Allure of Mustard vol 2: Sexy Mustard

Ladies and gentlemen (gentleman? I don’t know how many of you are reading), the day has dawned for the second instalment in my mustard series and I am overwhelmed by this unique opportunity to use the phrase ‘sexy mustard’ in a sentence.

As I explained last time, mustard is an important colour at the moment and will continue to be so come autumn. The idea of this three-part series was to showcase different ways of wearing the colour that is usually considered quite difficult. Today’s entry was originally meant to be a Workwear Wednesday post but as you scroll down, you will undoubtedly realise why I changed my mind.

Somehow, as the shoot progressed, the mood quickly escalated from business-like to ‘pretending I’m starring in an obscure French cult movie called Sex in the Museum’. I have no explanation for this. The whole thing could be instructive, however, in terms of proving that it really isn’t about what you wear, but how you wear it.

This dress is, in fact, entirely work-appropriate. It’s midi-length, long-sleeved and the neckline is rather modest. I have worn it to work without any issues. As the pictures illustrate, however, you can easily take this dress to evening territory by adding little more than mussed-up hair and attitude.

The other lesson we can learn from this little etude is that you can totally do mustard as part of a print. This might sound like a pretty scary proposition and it’s probably not for everyone, but at least you shouldn’t dismiss the idea out of hand: it all depends. Frankly, I was rather surprised myself when I felt drawn to this dress when doing my regular Zara round. It probably also helped that it cost 12 euros on the sale, so the financial risk involved was rather minimal.

What do you think? Would you or wouldn’t you?

The dress and setting (been there actually is very inspiring. Like the use of “sexy mustard”, it almost beats hot caramel. Speaking of caramel, would it be a faux pas to team caramel heels with mustard attire ( top or dress) ?

Frankly, there are very few things I would deam a faux pas. Many things that seem wrong on paper actually work in specific cases in real life. Although caramel and mustard sounds completely fine (and potentially gorgeous) to me even on paper.

I have never thought I would jump on a mustard train… I do remember promising in a most solemn voice I would never buy or wear anything mustard… But there we go, I decided to buy mustard pillows for my living room. Not quite cloylthing, but let’s see where it takes me 😁 It looks stunning on you though!

I remember similar promises, usually made just before going out and buying the item I had forsworn🙂 But this is normal, things come back in completely different contexts, materials change… Also, no pressure from me, we should only wear what we feel excited about and comfortable in. And thank you!
