Workwear Wednesday*: Trouser Edition vol 1

Workwear Wednesday*: Trouser Edition vol 1

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably think I don’t wear trousers very often. This is manifestly not true, I wear them possibly 50% of the time, at least in winter. It’s just that outfits featuring trousers generally seem less exciting to me, they are a fall-back option when it’s very cold or I haven’t shaved my legs or I need to be extra comfortable (Yes, I wear jeans to work. Wearing them today, in fact, and they are ripped.). As a result, I don’t photograph these looks very often.

On one hand, this is completely understandable, because who’d be interested in boring outfits? On the other, it’s somewhat misleading and in a way unhelpful, because we all need basic outfits that don’t look super basic. In this spirit, I have a couple of trouser-centric posts coming up, starting with this Massimo Dutti suit. I have not yet worn it to work, simply because it’s too cold in Brussels. This means I don’t yet have real-life experience with this outfit, but it also means that for once, I’m ahead of the weather and can provide some forward-looking ideas.

Trouser suits are huge for spring, especially if they are pastel. This linen one is lovely and Massimo Dutti in fact has another similar suit in their limited edition collection that I think looks even better. Unfortunately, the trousers didn’t fit me well and I also admit that the cropped length is more practical. I like the fit of the blazer: it’s double breasted, making it look quite masculine, but not crazily oversized, which doesn’t tend to suit me that well. The paperbag waist of the trousers isn’t the most flattering for my body type, but I’ll live.

I’m generally trying to buy less clothes while still keeping my wardrobe interesting. I know I sound like a cliché, but a trouser suit is versatile. You can wear it as a full outfit and both pieces separately. The jacket would go perfectly with jeans, anything white or pastel or in neutral colours. The lower half would work nicely with a knit, a different blazer or, in case you have a waist (unlike me), with a simple t-shirt. It’s also equally suited for work and more casual occasions.

We’ll see if wrinkling will be an issue, as linen wrinkles like mad. Then again, I think it’s one of the few fabrics that doesn’t necessarily look bad with some wrinkles, and it’s not 100% linen anyway. The suit is nicely structured and I hope that will help – with very relaxed cuts, you can more easily look like you slept in your clothes.

What do you say? Are you pro-trousers?

*Totally not Wednesday again, I know, but I like to make sure all workwear posts have similar titles. I didn’t have the pics on Wednesday yet and yesterday I spent the evening drinking wine and drunk posting is a bad idea.

I love trousers as they are ‘easier’ to throw on, skirts require more thought about state of legs/ambient temperatures/shoe choice but I always feel more dressed up in a skirt/dress and that can lift my mood much more than the ripped jeans! BTW – how to I subscribe to your blog, just discovered it, love it and would like to receive it by email? Thanks!

Yes, I agree – trousers are often easier, but when I’m going for impact, it’s almost always skirts or dresses. Regarding subscription: when you open a post and scroll down to the very bottom, you should be able to click a box and get notifications. Thank you and welcome!

Love the colour, will look good also with slight tan, so a great summer option! I love dresses, but I tend to wear trousers (mostly jeans) as work could involve checking the unfinished projects on building sites, so heels and skirts are just not practical for me… sigh

You are right, the colour should be great for summer. And thank you, I do like the hair as well, unfortunately it doesn’t look like this every day… Btw, your job sounds badass!

I love this look so much! The colour suits you. I wear mostly skirts and dresses or interesting denim with details, ripped or studded and my obsession is pears on denim (light blue, grey, black, white denim…) I wear leather trousers in the winter and cigarette black ones. This makes me think I should try to wear trousers in other colours than black. But pastel blue is too much for a first step. I should start with grey and dark green.
Please post some outfits with jeans, I’m curious! I don’t think any outfit on you could look boring! By the way, I’m frenchleathersandfog on instagram 🙂

Hi, Marina, how lovely to see you! Thanks for stopping buy. I’ve been wanting to get a pair of leather trousers for a long time: do you have a recommendation for the best ones? And as luck would have it, I’ve got a post that includes jeans coming up. Not the most flattering jeans, mind you, which hopefully will read as interesting🙂 And I find it very helpful when people let me know who they are on Instagram/elsewhere, this Internet world can be so confusing.

Oh, I look forward to your jeans post! Unflattering? Sounds so interesting! I’m far from an expert on leather pants, as unlike you, I live in a warm climate and I can only wear them during the winter. My favourites are from Zara and Replay. Now it’s time for lighter clothing and apart from jeans, I’m wearing my favourite black satin pants by Gestuz, and black ruched leggings by the same brand, with my Ann Demeuelemeester Patience jacket in white. I always thought that Massimo Dutti was not for me but your pastel suit looks amazing and I’m going to stop by a store one of these days and check out their Spring collection, it already looks promising online! Thank you for the endless inspiration. As an anti-capsule wardrobe person who loves to dress up according to each day’s mood, the variety in your outifts is something I truly appreciate!
