7 Autumn Trends to Maybe Consider

All my autumn style content is still in production (this sounds much fancier than ‘the photographer will send me the pics at some point’) or yet to be shot on Thursday, but I cannot really put off the trend post any longer, both for weather and retail reasons. If you are anything like me, you are doing some some autumn clothes shopping already or at least thinking about it. Nothing here is surprising if you follow fashion even a little, but I hope it might serve as a useful overview.

1. Animal print. I think this is the most brightly burning of all the autumn/winter trends. Leopard is literally everywhere (and has been since the summer) with zebra, snake print, tiger and any other animal you can think of making a strong showing as well. In Estonia, leopard is traditionally been considered tacky, but I think by now we really should get over it – leopard is in fact a neutral. Although I admit that when wearing double leopard ‘ironically’ on a Kopli tram in Tallinn, the irony is likely to be lost on most people. I have several posts coming on leopard, I only hope the trend hasn’t completely fizzed out by the time I manage to post them. My top tip: there is so much choice that there should be an option for everyone. Don’t panic and buy the fist spotty item you see.

2. Heritage. Another mega trend, this encompasses tweed, plaid, other types of check, scarf print, a fondness for coats and jackets and so on. I love this mood and always have, it makes me think of the Scottish Highland, Nancy Mitford and other things I adore. I’m on a lookout for the perfect tweed skirt that I plan to wear with bare legs and a romantic blouse. All the scarf print dresses and and skirts also look surprisingly appealing. This is possibly also the most practical of all the trands, as it never really goes out of style and no-one can say that a checked masculine coat is a frivolous purchase.

3. Leather. Leather has been present on the fashion landscape for a long time (leather trousers in particular), but it has exploded this season. You don’t need to stick to trousers, there are many skirts and coats as well. You are also not limited to real leather, there are lots of fake options around. Everything glossy is will strike down two trends at once – or three, if it’s a brown glossy vinyl trench🙂

4. Brown. Yes, that brings me to brown. This shift has been occurring for a while as well, with all those caramels and mustards paving the way for brown proper. As I’ve said before, it all comes down to texture: shades of brown look lovely in silk, cashmere, leather and tweed and the effect is especially impressive if you wear different browns and different textures together. Also, I adore these H&M boots on the cover pic.

5. Neon. No, it’s not all about brown tweed, neon is back big time. It is part of a a larger 80s revival that could itself be on this list. I like it most out of context, however. Yes, I’m going to say I like it with tweed. Have I mentioned I like tweed? Well, laugh all you want, but I’m saying a lime green neon poloneck with a tweed skirt is a great combo.

6. Volume. Like neon, this is a more editorial/younger trend that ranges from puffer coats to wearing lots of things on top of each other to just weird proportions. I also feel there is a link to modest dressing, basically a way to do modest dressing in a more fashion way. It’s not necessarily my favourite trend of this bunch, but I feel a certain disturbing attraction to puffer jackets, especially this one.

7. Cowboys. This is a proper trend, there is lots of prairie- and cowboy-inspired stuff around, but I’ve added it mostly because I’m obsessed with a very specific idea of a cowboy boot. I once saw a black version with classic colourful designs that someone had customised by just roughly cutting it down to a low ankle boot and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. And trust me, I’m not usually a person to give much thought to cowboy boots.

Are you planning to wear any of these?

YES!!!!! Apart from neon and puffa coats I wear all of this, even if I shouldn’t (dressing like a cowboy looks a bit odd when visiting my farm-dwelling parents, and darn it, I haven’t found the right boots either). My wardrobe has been getting worryingly trendy in the past couple of years – everything I like has come massively into fashion (gingham, polka dots, red, lilac, leopard, velvet, sleeves, dark florals, tartan, longer hemlines) so I have shopped accordingly, and now I look like I have no mind of my own . But it’s all stuff I genuinely love (yes, including brown) so I guess I shouldn’t care. Corduroy finally seems to be hitting the shops too – I’ve been waiting for that trend for a while. Also, Heritage looks right every single autumn. Love it! Any micro-trends to keep an eye out for? The September issues seemed even more incoherent than usual this year.

I think one reason why our wardrobes are trendy is that trends have become more democratic (or yiu could say commercially smarter). Every season, there is a palette of trends rather than one very specific direction, so everyone can usually find something they genuinely like. And corduroy is definitely back! I saw a pair of light blue trousers at Zara that looked very sumptuous and I think there was a mustard pair at & Other Stories? That is in fact one of the very few trends I find difficult to wear…

It is tricky! I love it for its texture and warmth (as with velvet, but that’s much more glamorous) but often the colours and styles limit it to retro or boring. Pastels (I’ve seen some good pinks) might be a way round it. I got a pale blue miniskirt and jacket from H&M which I’m planning to wear with chunky white sandals, or red trainers, in the hopes it will look less staid. Need to get the jacket altered first though as it’s too boxy. Still, a new suit, very exciting!

On the other hand, seeing so many recent trends in my wardrobe also makes me realise how much I’ve bought, despite thinking I’ve been buying less stuff, so hmmm.

Please keep the posts on leopard coming! I haven’t shopped for autumn clothes yet but I got a few leopard print items already. Leopard is a neutral so it can’t go out of style, right? 🙂
The only trend I cannot get is the volume, huge sleeves and ruffles and these puffer jackets. But yes to neon with tweed, out of context. I deam of warm brown coloured patent leather cowboy boots.

Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow 🙂

And volume is usually difficult for me as well, but I don’t want to completely ignore things that aren’t necessarily for me, especially if it’s more of an overview post. Everything here is so biased already anyway!
