Things I Want: 2024 Edition

Things I Want: 2024 Edition

It is this time of the year again when I think about objects I would like to own. It’s part daydreaming, part focusing the mind – while I like pretty things, I’ve become very impatient with random stuff. Especially if it’s me who has forgotten about my good intentions and bought some random stuff. Some of the things here are way out of my league, but making a list is satisfying nevertheless.

A Victoria Beckham dress. It is rare for me NOT to be lusting after a Victoria Beckham dress at any given moment and currently, it is specifically the Gathered Waist Midi Dress in Papaya. The choice is unfortunate on my part, as there are other colours of this model that are on sale and also look great, but I of course have my mind set on a new season shade. I already own a pair of matching shoes (by Mango, not VB), but I think the dress would look even better with pale blue or caramel or lavender accessories.

The Row Margaux bag. When I said that there are things on this list that are out of my league, I mostly meant this The Row bag. It is also sadly kind of a trend thing, as it’s become one of the ‘quiet luxury’ flagships, now that regular people have ruined Hermes Birkin by starting to recognise it. Unfortunately, I still want it – I love the design, it is roomy enough for me (particularly the 17-inch version, which is of course also the largest and most expensive version) and it would work well with my wardrobe. Apart from the insane pricing, what’s holding me back is that I cannot pick a colour. Classic black would be great, but I would also love it in brown suede, navy and tan (cuir). And if there is one thing I’m less likely to have than a bag from The Row, it’s four bags from The Row.

Lemaire Linoleum Boxing leather sneakers. Talking about ‘quiet luxury’ brands, I have another one on this list. And it’s French! Who would have thunk. To the uninitiated – Lemaire is designed by Christoph Lemaire (and Sarah Linh-Tran), the former artistic director of Hermes, known for his understated, functional pieces. Their aesthetic tends to be a bit too utilitarian for my taste, but I am obsessed with these white boxing shoes – I have been looking for something like this for a while. And they are on sale…

Gunia Project sweater. I have intentionally been seeking out Ukrainian fashion and design this year and have already bought a lovely embroidered dress and an Elenareva pant suit (pictures will come soon). Another thing I have been coveting is this pale yellow sweater by Gunia project. It is a lovely colour and an interesting take on a chunky knit. I generally hesitate to buy knitwear that is not made of cashmere – not because I’m a snob, but because my skin is ridiculously sensitive to wool -, but I have touched this one in the UDPS store in Luxembourg and it is soft and sumptuous.

Toteme scarf. For a person who constantly complains about ‘quiet luxury’ (see the upcoming post on the very topic), I sure have many brands that fit the description on my wish list. Another case in point: Toteme. I love a big scarf and this winter, they also happen to be on trend, which is a good time to buy things you like. Toteme has a great selection and I’m particularly interested in this brown-beige version. I also want Ugg boots in Burnt Cedar to match (I don’t care what people think, they are warm and they are comfortable), but they seem to be sold out everywhere.

A Vivienne Westwood choker. This year I realised a long-standing dream of acquiring a Vivienne Westwood dress (as you can see on the pictures). My happiness remains incomplete, however, as I do not own a Vivienne Westwood necklace. I know that the cool kids have already moved on to other things, but I will never get over her classic chokers. To my mind, they will always be in style and those who don’t agree are wrong.

Clip earrings. I love earrings, but as my ears are not pierced, I am limited to clip-on versions. Which can be frustrating, but the options are slowly improving. Alessandra Rich does glamorous, but modern ones like these, Roxanne Assoulin does colours better than anyone (these would be great with my hypothetical Papaya dress) and I also really like these simple rectangles from by Alona (with an all-gray outfit!).

Eau Coeur by Thomas de Monaco. I do not need to buy any perfume, ever again – I have enough to last me a lifetime, unless they’ll all spoil. But I still occasionally WANT to buy perfume. Eau Coeur is one of the most beautiful fragrances I’ve smelled in recent years, focused on magnolia and osmanthus, both gorgeous (a good magnolia in particular is hard to find, as quality oil is expensive, so the note tends to smell synthetic in mainstream fragrances and not be prominent enough for my taste in niche ones). I am also keeping my eye on eBay for a bottle of YSL Champagne (later Yvresse, reformulated) – I used to have a decant of this and it is one of the few perfumes I miss, as there is nothing else quite like it. And I want to try the original, Shiseido version of Feminite du Bois, which I have been scared to try in case I’ll like it much better than the current Serge Lutens version.

Cosmo glasses by Sophie Lou Jacobsen. I have a soft spot for beautiful glasses and after being faithful to Lobmayr’s champagne glasses for years (in my head only, I don’t own them), I have found a rival. Jacobsen’s Cosmo Coup is less classic, but equally gorgeous and I think would make a great cocktail glass as well. There is a similar collection (by Ulysse Sauvage) available in the Oblist shop, which is a great place for browsing. If you are more modernist in your tastes, I would recommend these glasses from them instead.

Thames & Hudson Catwalk series. I almost never put books on this list, as I tend to buy whatever book I feel like reading as soon as the feeling strikes. That said, I am less trigger happy when it comes to coffee table books. I do like them, but the little puritan in me insists that books with pictures are more frivolous and hence cannot be bought with the same lack of discipline that I apply to ’real books’. I would quite gladly own the entire Thames & Hudson Catwalk series, but Vivienne Westwood, Dior and Prada in particular. I am still not over the late 90s Dior couture…

Is there anything on your mind that you would not be opposed to acquiring next year?

On the photos, I am wearing this Vivienne Westwood dress and my old red velvet Prada pumps. Images by Laura Nestor Photography, hair by Natallia at Helen Heinroos Hair and make-up by Erle Taklai.
