The Dark Side of the Sun: Black in Summer vol 3

There are outfits that are a joy to photograph – maybe they have an interesting silhouette or an unusual combination of colours or they just look flattering and distinct on film. Then there are clothes that are a joy to wear, but do not necessarily impress when photographed.

While there is certainly a significant overlap between visual joy and practical joy, today’s look belongs firmly to the latter category. A black balazer, black trousers, t-shirt and trainers do not necessarily make one’s heart beat faster at a first glance. Because it’s basically a trouser suit, one might even wonder whether it’s in fact comfortable.

This is where the specifics come in. All the clothes here are by Zadig & Voltaire, a brand I love, but usually find too expensive at full price. However, everything I have bought from them, I’ve worn to death. What I like about them is that their wardrobe basics always come with a touch of cool. The blazer has a loose, easy fit and VOLTAIRE written on the back. The trousers look smart, but are soft and slightly stretchy, which makes them more comfortable than most jeans. They also have little star embellishments around the pockets. And while I find slogan t-shirts often tricky or tacky, ‘Patti’ is a slogan I can get behind.

You could wear this look with heels, and I have, but I feel a sporty shoe is an even better fit. These fancy Nikes are one option and I absolutely adore how they complement the black and white. For less flamboyant moods, simple white sneakers or Stan Smiths would be perfect as well. Black Converse would also work. I must say I struggle to think of any trainers that would not look OK with this.

If your workplace isn’t particularly conservative, this makes for an easygoing office outfit. If it is, you can wear it over the weekend, it feels entirely effortless. Although frankly, once you substitute a pair of more elegant shoes for trainers, I don’t really see why this wouldn’t be appropriate in most offices.

What do you think? Does this look boring? Or casual in a good way?

I kind of tend to forget how expensive it is and be surprised every time I visit the store… Even during the sale, nothing is exactly cheap. On the plus side, what they do is cool rather than über-trendy, and can be worn for years.
